BOOK SPOTLIGHT: There’s a Young Man Dressed in Blue by Fabio Amabili
Publisher’s Synopsis: Present-day Milan. A brilliant young lawyer at a top international firm is handling the deal of his career: a high-stakes Italian-French acquisition in the offshore gas sector.
On the central Adriatic coast, a solitary man begins to uncover strange, unexplained events that no one wants to acknowledge.
Two lives, two worlds, one devastating collision.
Part legal thriller, part speculative mystery, There’s a Young Man Dressed in Blue blurs the line between rational order and the unknowable, delivering a twist that forces the reader to start over from page one.
My review: Translated from the Italian, this novel follows two separate tracks: First, an ambitious, workaholic young lawyer in a prominent Milan firm is assigned an important case , but in his attempt to perform due diligence he is given only redacted documents and stonewalled when he seeks critical information. Second, strange events are occurring on Italy’s Adriatic coast: whales are dying and washing ashore, fishermen report mysterious glowing orbs racing across the sea, unexplained sickness among their crews, and haywire instruments and controls. A young man named Luca, a native of the town at the epicenter of the strange disturbances, is attempting to solve the mystery.
These two plot strands come together midway through the novel, and a fascinating premise for a legal/eco-thriller takes shape. As an Italophile, I enjoyed the Italian settings and found the translation smooth. My favorite parts of the book concerned the environmental mystery. I would have preferred a more straightforward narrative style and a clear resolution, but fans of experimental fiction may find this literary puzzle intriguing.
